Handle Guns Responsibly

Leaving KZSC

After five great years, I've decided that it's time for me & The Sound of Young America to leave
KZSC. My experience with the station has been wonderful -- I can't imagine a better place to learn the craft of radio. My special thanks go out to Broadcast Advisors Eric Schoeck and Michael Bryant, and to station managers Ru, Brian, Justine, Nick and Jen. All of the folks at KZSC have always stood behind my show every bit as much as I have.

When I started at KZSC, our "production studio" was dominated by a broken reel-to-reel machine and a mixing console that was the first the station ever bought in the early 1970s. Thanks to a lot of hard work by KZSC staff and some financial sacrifice on the part of the students of UCSC, the station is now in wonderful shape, with an up-to-date air studio, and two great production studios -- and it's always getting better. Who knows, maybe the time I free up on the KZSC schedule will be home to the next TSOYA...

There are early indications that this won't be a permanent departure from Santa Cruz's airwaves, but they're not certain, yet. Keep your fingers crossed, and keep listening to the podcast. You'll know as soon as I do.

Metro Santa Cruz Goldie Award

Speaking of Santa Cruz, thanks to the readers of the Metro Santa Cruz, who voted me a Goldie award for "Best Radio Personality" for the fourth time in the last five years. This year, it was a bronze award -- the gold winner, Sleepy John Sandage, was one of the folks who mentored me at KZSC my first semester on-air. KZSC repeated as the gold winner in the radio station category, and our beloved station manager Jen Marmor even managed to get a Goldie in the local hero slot. That's what a community station is all about, huh?

How to Be A TSOYA STAR

Do you want to be on The Sound of Young America? Call our listener comment line -- 206-984-4FUN -- and leave a message. You should say, "This is _______ from ____, and you're listening to The Sound of Young America." If you like, you can add, "I listen because ________"

I'll be putting the messages together, collage-style, for IDs and promos.

And of course, you can leave any other thoughts about the show there, too.

The blog continues to grow...

The Sound of Young America Blog had over one hundred thousand page views in the month of March, and was featured on C-Net's News.com, Boing-Boing.net, the Internet Movie Database, Monty Python's Daily Llama, and more. I just added some pretty pictures to it, so if you haven't already, check it out. I'm also including extensive notes and links on each week's show there, which can also be accessed through the Sound page on the website.

Prank the Dean in San Francisco

Prank the Dean (that's my sketch comedy group, with Jordan Morris "Boy Detective," Jim Real "The Master of Would You Rather" and Lauren Pasternack) has a gig coming up in San Francisco! It's the High Times Comedy Festival at Cobb's Comedy Club, January 21st. We're only doing a few sketches, but the lineup is really great (Doug Benson, Rick Overton, Tom Rhodes, Rob Cantrell among others), and it's a benefit for some pot thing or other (NORML and ASA). The Sound of Young America is officially neutral on the political issues involved, but bullish on the show.

Anyhoo, if you put your ear to the track, you'll hear the train's a comin'. Big things are in the offing for TSOYA, but they're not all locked down yet, so I can't announce them. But keep it locked, and you'll hear as soon as I know. And as always, please keep in touch! I love to hear from all of you via email or (now) by phone. So don't hesitate to drop a dime.

That's all the news for now, but I hope I'll hear from you with your thoughts on the show as we move forward. Just call (206)-984-4FUN or
email me at splangy@splangy.com.

Your #1 Bud,
JT, "ARS"
