Dear friends and board, I hope this finds you and your family well ... and the weather good. It is beautiful today here in San Francisco. DO YOU WONDER? Do you wonder where IT may go in business and in villages and slums? I just viewed a very informative, brief slide show by Abbie Lundberg: http://www.slideshare.net/abbielundberg/cio-dilemma What struck me especially is how the insights and suggested directions in this presentation often apply to work like ours in ICT for Development. I'll explain how I see these new ideas apply to the likes of us in my next update. HEADSUP I want also to give my SE Asia colleagues a headsup. I am planning to return to the region within three weeks. I hope to see you while I'm there. More news on this, too, soon. Jhai will be breaking new ground again. MY DAD Today would have been my father's 92nd birthday. This poem that is in my book for today reminds me of him: Happiness That is happiness; to be dissolved into something complete and great. WILLA CATHER My father was educated as an accountant. My father loved the practice of business and especially numbers. He was honest, meticulous, very clear, almost always humble and very hard-working. He had a passion for his work! He was happy in it. He did his best to do no harm. He did his best ... period. He was human and had his flaws, of course, but he did his best. What he cared about was the practice of business ... and his family. He found the practice of business and caring for his family enough. He truly felt dissolved in two things complete and great. These updates are sometimes read by 25,000 people, I'm told. Each of you have a passion for something. I am officially old, now. I am old enough to get away with saying things like this: I hope you know your passion and follow it. If your passion is a bit like those of folks at Jhai, I hope we can help one another in ways that help poorer people use business methods and ICT to help themselves. yours, in Peace, Lee --- Lee Thorn chair, Jhai Foundation I tweet @leethorn_jhai Way cool .... see 30 sec video of 2003 JhaiPC bicycle-powered set up at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiZa_A0QrtQ 350 Townsend St., Ste. 309 San Francisco, CA 94107 USA +1 415 344 0360 (office) +1 415 420 2870 (mobile) lee@jhai.org www.jhai.org DONATIONS VIA WEBSITE See my son, Jesse's stuff here: http://www.soundofyoungamerica.com See my son, Brendan's band stuff here: http://www.myspace.com/totalannihilationband See my son, John, at UC Santa Cruz ... he's awesome ... as are you!
